I had to do some configuring of Java to accept the ZyXEL certificate, and I had to place link my firewall’s URL into the exception site list, but once that was done it started working. Now I have two possibilities, although with the Java fiddling required I prefer the VPN client for my remote users. Plus, Java.
Glad to hear that someone has gotten good tech support from ZyXel. I have also gotten good support from them on firewall questions, but the guy I spoke to about the VPN basically told me to follow the manual and got off the phone as fast as he could.
Make sure the firmware is up to date on your Zyxel. Unfortunately, there are differences between the different USG devices in terms of the specifics required for a working link VPN setup. Hopefully the differences will be minimal (if any) once you’ve updated to the latest firmware.
The kind of help I get from ZyXEL is of the hurried sort. The tech logs in to my firewall, finds an issue, fixes it, doesn’t tell me why or how, then gets me off of the phone. After a few of these kinds of calls and my problem is still there, I give up.
I had partial success by purchasing ZyXel’s VPN client. It’s hard to set up (I couldn’t slow194.tk”>vpn l2tp usg 100< get it to work by downloading the settings from the firewall as advertised), but the user was able to connect, get DNS, use apps, etc. However, downloading a file from our file server completely shut down Internet access for everyone on the local LAN (not a bandwidth issue, btw), and I had to tell him to not do that any more.
This works and works well, I’ve done it a few times. Primarily with IPSecuritas and Mac OS X, but a handful of times with the Zyxel VPN client as well (at one time go with XP), something I used quite recently in fact (with Win 7 Pro 64-bit).
That or pertino -but I definitely was wondering about zyxel’s ipsec vpn and sslvpn – just looked at one today and was confused by its implementation and just started working on something else… have LMI into that client anyway so don’t need the vpn.

– When I got through everything, the tunnel wouldn’t start. It turned out to be a problem with Perfect Forward Secrecy – the firewall didn’t select it by default, and the VPN client did. I turned it on in the firewall, and it started working.

– Firewall rule featuring the L2TP-VPN service. That servicedoesn’t exist on my firewall. I called ZyXEL support, and the tech logged into my firewall and added the two necessary rules. Done. The tech claimed that he’d never heard of a service called L2TP-VPN, but maybe he just wanted to get me off of the phone.
